How to Start Freelancing in 2026 as a Student and which skill best in 2027

How to Start Freelancing in 2026 as a Student

If you want to start freelancing in 2026, this one video is enough to get you started with freelancing. So grab a pen and paper and sit down.

Look, freelancing is a growing industry. Pakistan ranks fourth in the world in freelancing. In FY 2024–25, we generated $400 million in exports through freelancing, and it is expected to grow to $1 billion.

You just need to follow these six simple steps.

Step 1. Select the Low Competition and high Demanding Niche

For example:

  • You do graphic design for restaurants.
  • You do graphic design for real estate businesses.
  • You create commercial designs for agencies.

Specify your niche.

There are three major benefits of doing this.

Number one: In such a saturated and crowded market, positioning yourself will become much easier.

Number two: You will be able to build strong branding, which will help you establish authority.

Number three: You will be able to close more high-ticket clients.

For this, the first thing you need to do is create an avatar of your customer — understand exactly who your customer is.

For example, my customer could be a YouTuber who is creating long-form educational content on YouTube but isn't creating Reels for Instagram.

Why?

Because they don't have the time. They may also not understand how much potential Instagram has.

So I can help them grow on Instagram through my editing services.

Similarly, you can edit Reels for someone in the real estate industry and pitch your services to them.

For example, they may be running paid ads but not posting organic content.

So what can I do?

I can shoot content for them, edit their Reels, and manage their Instagram page.

This is how you should first define your customer.

Step 2: Select the Right Skill

Look, I'm going to tell you one of the biggest mistakes people make here: don't blindly run after passion and profession.

You simply need to look at what the market needs and provide that.

For example, if you decide to turn your passion into a profession and your passion is singing, but your singing is so bad that even if someone is outside your bathroom and suddenly the water stops, they still don't want to hear your voice — then you get the point.

So get out of this obsession with passion and simply look at what the market needs.

Let me tell you about some of the most in-demand skills for 2026. You can choose any one of them.

1. AI Automation

Businesses are adopting AI very rapidly.

You need to figure out how you can use AI to make complex business tasks easier and save businesses time, money, and energy.

This includes automation, development, and other AI-related services.

Figure out what you can do with AI.

2. Content Creation

Businesses have realized that if they want to survive in the long term, they need to create content on social media.

Content creation is a huge industry.

Within this field, you can become:

  • A video editor
  • A designer
  • A social media manager
  • A content strategist

There are many other fields within content creation. Pick one and build your career around it.

Businesses hire content creators and say, "Come and create content for us, and we will pay you."

This is a very growing industry.

3. Digital Marketing

Even today, there are many businesses that are wasting their money on traditional marketing.

They don't know how to market their businesses online.

So you can help them.

However, many things have changed because of AI.

For example, if you become an SEO expert, traditional SEO used to mean optimizing websites so they could rank on Google.

Now, you also need to think about ranking not just on Google but on AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

A lot of people now use ChatGPT instead of Google for certain searches. People are also using Claude and other AI tools.

When people go to these AI tools looking for a solution to a problem, ChatGPT may provide them with a solution along with links showing where the information or references came from.

So if your website is appearing in those recommendations, there is a higher chance that the customer will reach your website.

Step 3: How to Learn the Skill

Now comes Step 3: how to learn the skill.

Let's say you've selected any skill.

Maybe you chose SEO, Meta Ads, content creation, or personal branding.

You have selected one skill.

Simply go to YouTube.

There are many free resources and courses available online where you can learn almost all of these skills.

Start by learning the basics for free.

Once you have learned the basics, what do you do next?

Start practicing.

For example, let's say you are offering video editing services.

You can learn the basics of video editing through a free course. Once you've learned video editing, start practicing.

Find popular YouTube creators and popular Instagram creators.

Take their videos and edit them.

Create before-and-after examples and post them on your social media.

If you're learning Meta Ads, choose an industry and create content around strategies for that industry. Then publish that content on social media.

This will give you two major benefits.

First, you will build your social media presence.

Second, this will also become your portfolio.

All the editing work you've done isn't wasted.

You can show potential clients:

"Yes, I may not have professional experience yet, but I am capable of doing this work."

You can use these videos and examples to convince clients and close deals.

Step 4: Build Your Portfolio

There are many tools you can use to build a portfolio.

You can build one on Behance. You can build one on Notion.

But I would recommend that you have your own personal website.

Invest in a website.

Buy your own domain and hosting, and create your portfolio website there.

Whatever work you do, add it to your website.

Look, you may not have any experience right now.

That's okay.

Your content can be on social media, and at the same time, you can have a professional website where you've organized your entire portfolio.

This creates a very good impression on your potential client.

You need to look at yourself from the client's perspective.

Ask yourself:

"How do I look to the client?"

"What should my work look like to the client?"

"What should my website look like to the client?"

If I were the client, would I immediately want to hire this person?

That's how you need to think.

And let me tell you something interesting.

There is a lot of saturation in freelancing. I agree — there is a lot of competition.

But the best part is that many people are not doing all these things.

So if you put in a little extra effort, you can differentiate yourself from a huge portion of the crowd because many freelancers simply aren't doing it.

They may have very good skill sets, but they don't know how to showcase them.

For building your portfolio website, you can also visit our website.

There is an offer available there. Your total investment is approximately ₹89,000.

With that, your portfolio website will be built.

Along with that, you will get access to our premium community and free access to premium training for LinkedIn and Meta Ads.

I'm also currently conducting an Instagram Masterclass where I'm going to reveal exactly how I'm making $2,000 per month from Instagram.

I will share my exact content strategy there.

You can access that masterclass for free.

You need to build your portfolio, so go there and check out the offer. You will also get other benefits.

Step 5: How To Get Clients As a Freelancer

Now let's talk about Step 5, which is how to get clients.

Let me tell you five methods.

1. Content Creation

Educate people.

Create educational content about your skill.

Share your learning journey with people.

Show your real self to your audience.

In the long run, this will help you build your own personal brand on social media.

There are three major benefits.

Number one: You will build your personal brand.

Number two: You may not get a huge number of clients directly from social media content creation.

You may get some, but probably not a huge number.

However, you can use this content to convince potential clients and demonstrate your capabilities.

This creates a very strong impact on the client because they can directly see your work.

Instead of simply sending a Google Drive portfolio, build a professional portfolio website and post your content and work on social media as well.

The third benefit: In the long run, you can also get customers from there who may buy your physical or digital products.

2. Cold Emails and What is Cold Email

This is one of the most effective methods.

Here's how to do cold emailing.

Find users who are not very active on Instagram or other social media platforms and who aren't creating Reels or other content.

Make a list of them.

You can often find their email addresses in the About section.

Once you have their email addresses, create a Reel for each content creator based on their content.

That Reel will become part of your portfolio, and you can also post it on your social media.

So you're not really wasting anything.

Tag the creator as well.

Then email them and tell them:

"This is the work I can do for you."

Your goal is to book a meeting with them.

They will already be able to see your work.

If you can email five creators every day — or even two creators per day — that's still progress.

Suppose you contact around 60 users or content creators every month.

You create 60 videos and tag 60 creators.

Let's assume a 10% conversion rate.

Even if only a few respond, let's say five people respond.

Maybe three become clients.

Even if you charge ₹50,000 per client, you could potentially have ₹1.5 lakh worth of clients.

3. Use Your Network

Let's say you've learned advertising but you're not getting clients.

What should you do?

Look around your local area.

You will find many businesses that aren't doing proper marketing.

Go and pitch to them.

You can tell them:

"I'll set up your ads for free. I'll create the ads, shoot the content, edit it, and run the campaign for you. You only need to provide the campaign budget."

You don't have to charge them initially.

But once they like your work and start getting sales, you can ask them to pay you.

You may receive very little money from this work initially.

But your portfolio will be built.

Then you can use that portfolio to attract high-ticket clients later.

So use your network.

Join freelancing groups.

Let me tell you from my personal experience: when I started, I joined Facebook freelancing groups and WhatsApp groups myself, and I got clients from there.

They don't pay a lot.

In fact, they often pay very little because many people there are outsourcing work.

But you can get good reviews from those projects.

Your portfolio gets stronger.

You gain experience.

Even if the money is low, you're still building experience — and you're earning something at the same time.

So freelancing groups can actually help you find good clients.

Join those groups.

Stay active.

And, whenever possible, showcase your work there.

4. Which Platform is Best for Freelancing

I'm telling you about freelancing platforms at the very end of this list.

There is a lot of competition on Fiverr and other major freelancing platforms.

When you go there, ranking your gig can be very difficult.

You can do SEO for your gig.

You can optimize your profile.

But everyone is already doing these things.

So if you enter a highly competitive niche, ranking can become extremely difficult.

That's why it's better to follow the other methods I mentioned above.

However, you can still use freelancing platforms.

If you find clients outside the platform, you can also bring the work onto your freelancing platform where appropriate so you can build reviews there.

Those reviews can help you attract more clients in the long run.

Out of these methods, let me tell you my personal favorites.

Number one is social media.

Create content.

Number two is cold emailing.

It is extremely effective.

I also got social media management clients this way when I started.

I showed my work.

I was offering SEO services and content management services, as well as YouTube video SEO and channel management services.

So what did I do?

I picked a channel.

I analyzed all of its SEO.

I looked at where they were making mistakes.

I analyzed their titles, thumbnails, videos, and everything else.

Then I created a report.

I also published a case study of this work on my YouTube channel.

I was able to close a client for approximately £300–£500 through this process.

So cold emailing can be extremely effective.

Number three is freelancing groups.

This is a personal recommendation because I got orders from these groups when I started.

So I'm telling you to try it.

If you're a complete beginner, you should definitely give it a try.

Step 6: Client Onboarding

Now comes Step 6: client onboarding.

As soon as you bring a client into a meeting, the client has talked to you, understood everything, and understands the work involved, you need to make the process very seamless.

Make it very smooth so the client can quickly start working with you.

If your communication isn't clear, or if you've made the process too complicated for the client, you can lose the opportunity.

For example, imagine the client wants to work with you immediately, but you say:

"Okay, I'll get back to you in four days."

Or:

"I'll send you my pricing in two days."

Or:

"Let me see how many videos there are."

Or:

"Give me a week to figure everything out."

Don't do this.

You need to have these things prepared beforehand.

You should already know:

  • What you're going to charge
  • What your pricing strategy is
  • What your service includes
  • What your onboarding process looks like

Make the onboarding process very smooth for the client.

Remember, the smoother your process is, the faster the client can move forward with you.

If you make the process too complicated or show too much uncertainty or immaturity, the client may walk away after you've already done all the hard work.

All your effort can go to waste.

So keep the onboarding process very smooth.

You also need proper documentation.

There are many online tools available.

You can simply use them to collect the required information and send the client a link where they can sign the necessary documents.

Then the process is complete.

There are also many payment gateways available.

If you're working directly with clients, you can use them to receive payments.

But make sure the entire process remains smooth.

A Pricing Strategy for Beginners

Let me give you an amazing pricing strategy for beginners.

It's very simple.

Recently, I met some friends who are beginner freelancers.

I recommended this strategy to them, and when I hear their feedback, they're very happy with the results.

Set a fixed price for your service.

For example, let's say you will edit five videos for a client.

Set a fixed price for those five videos.

Now, suppose your editing helps that client get more views and reach.

You can then say:

"Since the content has generated this percentage of growth in views, you can add a bonus for me."

Or you can earn a commission.

For example, if you're a Meta Ads expert, you can say:

"This is my fixed service price. In addition to that, for any sales I generate above this, you can give me a 5% or 10% commission."

This gives you some skin in the game.

It also motivates you to help the business grow as much as possible so that you can earn more money too.

And it is also good for the business.

Because when you have your own motivation to help the business grow, you will work harder and provide better results.

So you are happy, the client is happy, and everyone benefits.
